Milton Abbas is is located in the heart of Dorset and at the Hambro Arms, we invite our guests to explore our beautiful county, based in our own historic and picturesque village. From charming towns and villages, National Trust properties, to beaches and stunning coastal walks, there is so much to see and do.
Towns and Villages
Milton Abbas is about 20miles from large towns like Weymouth, home of the 2012 Olympic sailing with a safe, sandy beach, or Poole,which has the second largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney, and Sandbanks, a small sand spit across part of the harbour mouth, that boasts the fourth highest land values in the world. Smaller towns include Blandford Forum with its Georgian architecture and Dorchester, a market town with a Roman history. The 'Casterbridge' of Thomas Hardy novels. Visit Thomas Hardy's Cottage, in nearby Higher Bockhampton, the birthplace of the English author.
Take a trip to Shaftesbury, with the famous Gold Hill (from the Hovis advert) and Cerne Abbas, a quaint village, renowned for the ancient figure named the Cerne Abbas Giant. Alternatively, take a trip on the steam railway stopping at the beautiful village of Corfe Castle exploring the castle itself, before re-boarding the train to the seaside town of Swanage.
The Dorset Coastline
The Dorset Coast Path is just one section of the South West Coast Path. Excluding the Isle of Portland, the Dorset stretch is around 73 miles long. The Dorset and East Devon part of the coast path is a World Heritage Site. It is a stunning coastline to explore. Lulworth Cove is the prime Dorset attraction for a leisurely walk to Durdle Door or further along the challenging hills.

National Trust Properties
The National Trust is blessed with a number of fantastic properties within a short drive of Milton Abbas. Kingston Lacy, home of the Bankes family for more than 300 years, is a striking 17th-century house noted for its lavish interiors, an outstanding art collection and the beautiful lawns with a restored Japanese tea garden. Secrets of the Hoare family history are revealed at Stourhead House, with a world-famous 18th-century landscape garden and magnificent lake, shimmering with reflections of classical temples, mystical grottoes and rare and exotic trees. Other properties include Brownsea Island, an island situated in Poole Harbour, with fine walks and spectacular views of the harbour. Brownsea is home to the endangered red squirrel.
Other Attractions
Bovington Tank Museum.The tank was a British invention that changed warfare for ever when it was introduced in World War One – and Bovington has been the home of the tank ever since .From the Somme to Tiananmen Square or D-Day to Desert Storm the tank has played a part in shaping history. The Tank Museum is the only place where many of these rare and historic vehicles can be seen. Monkey World. This internationally-acclaimed ape rescue centre, in 65 acres of beautiful Dorset woodland, is home to over 230 primates – including the largest group of chimps outside Africa. Bird watchers will enjoy the bird sanctary at Arne while the Abbotsbury Swannery is a perfect day out. Further afield, take a day trip to the Isle of Wight or even Guernsey from Weymouth on Condor Ferries.
