Places of InterestAs well as being historic in its own right, Milton Abbas lies in the Blackmore Vale, an area much loved and vividly depicted by Thomas Hardy. This is quintessential rural England with gentle rolling pastures, patchwork fields and hidden hamlets. The village lies in between Dorchester (12 miles), Dorset’s county town, and Blandford Forum (9 miles). Dorchester has a rich history dating back to prehistoric and Roman times, and the birthplace of Thomas Hardy is in nearby Bockhampton. The giant at Cerne Abbas (22 miles) and the ruins of Corfe Castle (26 miles) are nearby places of historical interest. Other attractions include Wincanton Racecourse (24 miles), Longleat Safari Park (40 miles), and the National Trust properties of Kingston Lacy (19 miles) and Stourhead (36 miles). Sherborne Castle, where Sir Walter Raleigh once lived, is only 22 miles from here, while the tank museum at Bovington Camp is 12 miles. Dorset's Jurassic coast, a world heritage site, is also just a 30 minute drive across the rolling Dorset Downs. Dorset has plenty of interesting places to walk, including Lulworth Cove and the Blue Pool near Swanage.
